While it is not a requirement to have a lawyer present or seek legal advice, hiring an attorney is always the best choice. Someone who chooses to represent himself or herself in court is considered a pro se litigant. 
There are several resources available to pro se litigants provided by the Lafayette Bar Foundation.

Lafayette Bar Foundation Pro Bono Project
The Pro Bono Project was established in 1987 as a cooperative effort between Acadiana Legal Service Coorporation (ALSC) and Lafayette Bar Association. The purpose of the project was to provide indigent clients of Lafayette Parish with quality legal assistance in civil matters. It is one of the premier pro bono programs in the state.

Pro Bono Volunteers
Our volunteers provide much needed civil legal services to the poor within Lafayette Parish. Over the past few years, the Pro Bono Project has developed volunteer opportunites for any level of participation. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the Pro Bono Director 

Our Programs

Counsel on Call is an ask a lawyer type pro bono program which gives self represented litigants an opportunity to discuss legal matters with volunteer attorneys.

Protective Order Program helps survivors of domestic violence obtain a Title 46 Protective Order against their abuser. 

The Homeless Experience Legal Protection (H.E.L.P.) Program helps homeless individuals obtain certified copies of birth certificates to prove their identity when applying for jobs and shelter.

Free Legal Seminars are hosted in the community and presented by attorney volunteers on various subjects.
